What is spiral photography?
Spiral photography is the taking of pictures that are things in the shape of a spiral. This can be with actual spirals formed or spirals that have been made to create effect and show beauty of images.
Why I chose this topic?
I chose Spirals because I felt that it has a lot of potential in it and it can portray some of the other themes that was offered to me so I thought I would do this topic. In addition I thought it would be fun conveying my ideas to this topic and seeing what I get out of each shoot.
My Ideas
Andy Goldsworthy
Examples of his work
Analyzing his work
This is an example of one of Goldsworthy's spiral images. I like this image because I like the way the spiral is through the ice block and the sun is shining through it which gives it a real good effect. In addition I like how he has used a medium depth of field so you can see some of the background as it makes the image more unique and the spiral really stand out.
I like this image because of the colour contrast with in the spiral. Also I like the use of a large depth of field because the image doesn't need much background to stand out as the colours make the image unique. I like how he has used a normal exposure as it doesn't need much more lighting to the image.
Yuval Cadmon
Yuval Cadmon is a photographer who concentrates on the trace of light.
Born: 1957 Where: La Plata,Argentina Occupation: Architecture and Urban design He has been interested in light since his father showed the magic of motion in a dark room when he was a child. His camera is his trusted friend and partner to show his fascinating experiences. |
Examples of his work
Analysing his work
I like this image because I like the way Cadmon conveys the spiral with the colours. The colours make the image stand out more because they contrast well together which gives it a really good effect. I also like the different shades of light that have been used as it blends with the image. I like how the depth of field only shows the image and not a lot of darkness in the image.
This image is subtle like the other one which is good because it gives it its own style. This makes the colours stand out because they are really neon and if the image was subtle it wouldn't go well with the aim. I like the way he has used different shades of pink and blue to make this image effective and show the shape much better.
Matthias Haker
Examples of his work
Analysing his work
I like this Image because it really shows one of the photographers main topics and it really shows off his ability. In addition I like it because the colours contrast really well together. Also the clouds and the sky in the top of the building really make the spiral shape stand out. I like how the bushes are there as it gives the image a really warm feeling and comforting but they can also give a sense of awareness which is nice.
I like this image because the emotion conveyed through it is very warm and loving. Also it gives a sense of innocence because of all the white that has been used. In addition the use of the stair case for the spiral makes the image more effective because of the colours and how bright they are.
Shoot 1
Plan
For my example of Goldworthy's work I plan on recreating the one where the leaves are spread in a spiral shape. For this I am not only going to use leaves I also plan on using things like:

My Worst Image
This is my worst image because I feel it is a little plain and I think I needed to check some of the sizes of the rocks so that they are in size order. If the rocks were in size order i think I might of liked it a little more and it would look a bit more like Goldsworthy's images. In addition I think the angle the image was taken in isn't in the right position so the background doesn't look that good with the stone as it was meant to. In addition I think the depth of field needs to be a little bigger so you can see less of the background.
My Best Image
I think this is my best image because I like the depth of field of it is just right where I wanted it. Additionally I like the way the stones go around the plant pot where the cactus is. I feel this has included some of Goldsworthy's shoots but I have also added my own personal touch to it. Also I like the angle the image was took at as I feel it looks better than it did.
Shoot 2
Plan
For my second shoot I am planning on following the work of Andy Goldsworthy and showing a spiral with in using nature. I will show this by taking pictures of the inside of a rose so that you can see the spirals hiding with in nature. I know this is basic but I plan to do more complex shoots in the time coming and I felt that something easy to start it was the way to go with this topic. I will try and get different colour roses to make my work stand out more. Also I will try different depths of fields to see which of the spirals look better in this shoot.
My Worst Image
This is my worst image because the depth of field is too big and the image is out of focus. In addition you can sort of see the spiral shape but it isn't very clear and it doesn't look very appealing to my audience. I don't like the angle I took this image at and although it shows a lot of colour it doesn't stand out to me. Also I don't like the rough texture it gives off as it looks really rough.

My Best Image
This is my best image because it has a medium depth of field which is good as it can show the colours of each of the roses and the spirals inside of them. Also I like it because you can see the how different the spirals are and on you can see the different colour contrasts which gives this image a bigger impact. If I did this image again I would do it on a different coloured surface to give it an even better affect.
Shoot 3
Plan
For this shoot I am going to be using a necklace and i am going to try and create different spirals with it to show the different kind of spirals that you can have with objects used in everyday life. Also I plan on showing how the necklace is joined but focusing in on the spirals on the inside of the necklace. I plan on using different backgrounds to see which background looks more efficient in doing this shoot.
Shoot 4
Plan
For this shoot I plan on using different sized shells to create a spiral shape. In addition I plan on focusing in on some of the spirals which are already created with in the shells. This is so the depths of field are different and I can see what the different images will look like based on colour and size. Hopefully these images will show what spirals can be found and how spirals can be made to be effective. I will use a normal exposure for these images as I don't need a lighter one or darker one as the lighting will be good and the main focus will be on the middle of the spiral so that it is obvious of all the different shapes and sizes.
Worst Photo
Best Photo
This is my best image because it is in focus and the whole image is in the shot. In addition the spiral looks really well presented and looks really good. Additionally the shells all go in size order which makes the image look very effective and really attractive to look at.
Shoot 5
Plan
For this shoot I planned on using roses chocolates to create a spiral with. I had three different types of ideas in this shoot. My first idea was to use the chocolates in the rapper to show colour with in the image. My second idea was to take the chocolates out of the rappers and put them in a spiral shape to make my photos have a food theme to them. For my third idea I planned to focus in on the top of some of the chocolates to show the spirals that are made from them to get an view of the different spirals of certain spirals.
Worst Image
I don't like this image because you can't really see the spiral in this image so it doesn't really go with this project. In addition I really don't think the focus point on this image is on the middle chocolate i think it is on the background. Also I don't feel the background looks good to make this image effective. However I like how the barrel chocolate is in the middle as I think it makes the spiral stand out.
|
Best Image
I really like this image because I like how focusing in on the top of the chocolate has turned out. In addition I like how the spiral makes the image effective because of the way it is shaped. I really like how a large depth of field has made this chocolate look because on some of the other images I tried on this type of image you can see bits of the background which I find makes them less effective. Also when you looks at this image you feel hungry because you can see how delicious the chocolate looks.
Shoot 6
Plan
For this shoot i plan on using a bath bomb to make spirals in water. I know this is going to be hard but i think i can do it. I will use different depths of fields to show how different it looks when its close and not so close. For this I might have to over expose my images depending what time of the day I do it.
Worst Image
I don't like this image because it doesn't have the spiral shape like the other shoots do. In addition this image is quite plain and it doesn't look as good as some of the other images do. This image completely failed. The depth of field and exposure was right its the content of the picture itself that isn't.

Final Outcome
For my final outcome I plan to use nature to create my final spiral piece I will find different types of nature to use to see which suits best and I will present it with all the spirals linked together to give a cool look so that I have a final piece which was creative. With this I plan not only to show off my editing work but also to show off my photography skills in the process and show how creative I can be.
Practice edits using shoot 4
I have decided to practice my editing with my shoots I started with shoot 4 because I felt it would be the easiest to edit because of how the spirals are. As I was editing these images I thought about he filters i could use from filter gallery to make my edits more effective. Then I thought about merging the two photos i used together to create a image which would look very effective I then changed the opacity and style of my images just to see what it would look like.
These were the two images I used for the edits because I felt like these two were the best images from that shoot so I Thought I would try and make them even better by trying to edit them which helped me on my final outcome.
