What is Assembled Photography?
Assembled photography is when you take pictures of objects that are arranged in a certain way which can show the creative sides to photography and shows how different people's ideas have a different effect.
Why I Chose This Theme
I chose this theme because I feel like it doesn't really link with any of my other projects so it is something new to show my photography skills off. Also I feel that this theme has a wide range of things you can focus on. For example you could focus on colour or food and even different everyday objects which I feel gives me lots of choices of what to do for my shoots.
Barry Rosenthal
His work
Analysing his work
I like this image because it clearly represents different colours and sizes of lighters you can get. Also i like how Rosenthal has used a small depth of field to get all the lighters into the image. In addition I feel the way that they are in colour order makes the image stand out more because it looks like the layout has been considered more rather than having any lighter anywhere. Furthermore, I think that the exposure being just right makes them all stand out especially with the colours and I think the use of a white background makes the colours stand out more which shows the theme of assembled well through the colours because of the way they are organised.
I like this image because it looks very chaotic especially with the colours which shows how the theme of assembled doesn't always have to be neat and organised it can be tangled and chaotic. Also,I like the use of a medium depth of field because you can see the full image without the excess background which is not needed. In addition, I like how the main focus of the image is on the strings because it shows the way it has been assembled well. Furthermore I like how the image is a little underexposed as it shows the darker colours clearer which again shows the chaos behind the image.
Sara Cwynar
Her Work
Analysing her work
In my opinion this image shows a very basic assembled theme but I feel like the consideration of the objects and colours shown in the image makes it a higher piece of photography. I like how she uses a medium depth of field because I think that it doesn't show the excess background which I feel would make the image a lower quality. In addition the use of an under exposed image helps to blend the brighter colours with the background which I think makes the way the image has been built stand out to it's audience. Furthermore, the mixture of colours shown in this image shows the different colours of the kitchen and how chaotic it can be to cook.
I think that this image is really good as it shows a different way of showing the theme of assembled. This is shown through the way the objects are arranged on the image. I feel this shows us a personal view of Cwynar because she is using stuff that she likes. I also really like the way she has a edited it around an image of someone because it shows clearly different way stuff is assembled. I think that the use of a slightly under exposed image makes the colours of the objects stand out more.
Tom Hancocks
His Work
Analysing his work
This image is effective because it looks very surreal and it looks like something that I haven't seen before. I like the way that the object is assembled by the chain going around the ball because I think it looks cool. I also think that the use of a medium depth of field because it shows the whole object very clear and available to see. In addition I like the use of colours and how the scheming is really light because it makes the object stand out.
I like this image because it also looks surreal which makes the image stand out to me. I like the use of a medium depth of field because it shows the whole image fully. However I feel like the background of the image being white doesn't really show how well the house is assembled because it is camouflaged into the background. Maybe if the exposure of this image was a little the image would look a little clearer.
Some Shoot Ideas
These are some of the shoot ideas that I can do for this project. There are obviously many more shoots that you can do with this theme but these are the ones that I am considering to do for my shoot. My three favourite shoot ideas are: Food, Nature and Workshop because I feel these are strong ones to consider and are something to do with my personal life.
Shoot 1
Plan
For this shoot I am planning on taking pictures of some rubbish like sweet wrappers and crisp packets to show different types of sweets and how rubbish can be assembled. I will experiment with different exposures and depths of fields to show different ways that the layouts can look and to see which will be more effective for my shoot. In addition I think that styling my own layouts will show my understanding of assembled.
Worst Image
I feel this is my worst image because it doesn't show the theme of assembled as well as the other ones do. I also feel that the rubbish being inside the bag makes the image look blurry so it doesn't make the image stand out like it should do. However I do like the use of the large depth of field because it keeps the image together.

Best Image
This is my best image because it clearly shows the purpose behind the image properly and you can clearly tell what each piece of rubbish is which is good because it isn't only one thing that stands out it is all of them which shows the different colours and text fonts that are on each piece. I like how the exposure is at 0 because I feel like it sets the tone really well as I don't think it would look good if it was brighter or darker.
The Editing Process
My Edit
I feel this edit is quite good because I feel the colours stand out more which shows the different colours I have used to assemble this image. I think that with the colours being bolder it looks way better than the orginal image because it stands out other images was.
Shoot 2
Plan
For this shoot I am planning on taking pictures of objects to do with textiles and stationary. Then with these two shoots I am going to try and combine them in some way so that they can show the different ways of assembling things. In addition I think this would work as they can be combined together because they are sort of the same thing. I will try different depths of fields to see which one works the best for this shoot.
Textiles
Stationary
Worst Image
This is my worst image because it is under exposed so you can't really tell what the image has in it. I also feel like the layout isn't very effective in these types of images as I think it is better assembled in the images in the basket because the equipment is clearer and it doesn't look a mess. However I do think the medium depth of field is a good way to do this shoot.
|
Best Image
This is my best image because I feel that the layout is really well done so you can clearly see what is going on in the image. I also think that using an exposure of 0 is good because it means the image isn't too dark or too light which means the image is clearer. I also like how I have used a medium depth of field for this shoot because you can really see the objects clearly. However I don't like how parts of the table show under the cutting board. Other than this the image is really effective in what I have created.
Editing Process
First I started by copying (ctrl c) the stationary image and pasting (ctrl L) on to my textiles image. Then I had to duplicate the background so I could sandwich the image into the middle of the two background images. Then I decided to look through the filter gallery and I found a drawn one for the textile image and I thought this looked really good.
|
Once I had selected the filter I wanted to use I had to play around with the different settings. My final decision was to overlay the two images because I thought it would look really effective because it shows a clear difference between the two images. I also changed the opacity of the image to 68% so that the other image was shown clear.
|
Final Edit
This is my final edit I really like how this edit has turned out because I like how the filter has covered the parts of the table that were shown which shows the image as a better looking image than it originally was. I also like how the images have combined as I think they have combined nicely which makes the image look like one.
Shoot 3
Plan
For this shoot I am planning to assemble some fruit pastels into a model to show a different way that things can be assembled rather than just the collection type. This shoot will be done at home and I am going to try and make different models out of fruit like Dan Cretu. This will show the comparison between our work and how i can focus on his style. I will use different depth of fields and exposures to make my work have a better effect.
Worse Image
I think this is my worst image because it is really out of focus so you can't see the model very clear. In addition the angle of the camera is in the wrong place which means there is too much background shown in the image. However the exposure of the image is just right which would make it a good image if it didn't have these faults.
|
Best Image
I feel like this is my best image because the shape is constructed really well and I feel out of all the images the depth of field is just right. However when editing my image i am going to crop the excess background out and change the brightness because I feel the exposure on this image is really low. Also, I think this image portrays the thought that has gone into the shoot very well and that it doesn't look too chaotic like some of the other images do.
Editing Process
Shoot 4
Plan
For this shoot I am planning on working in the style of Sara Cwynar and being inspired by her image in which I will take pictures of things that are personal to my life and rearrange them on a black background so that it shows off my editing skills and a completely different way of looking at how you can assemble things through editing. This will show a totally different side than my other shoots do and will probably have a lot more depth into it.

Final Outcome
For my final outcome I am planning on doing a similar shoot to soot 4 by putting objects around a certain topic as I think that it will show a complete different way to show assembled . I also believe that this will show my editing skills off really well. This seems like a good idea to finish this project off as it shows a combined amount of skill.
